Celebrations are good for you!

Blog: Celebrations are good for you

Picture of Lynda-Ross Vega Co-author of Unlock the Power of Your Perception and Your Talent AdvantageThe holiday season is in full swing here in the US. It may even be a little more active this year than usual as folks attempt to make up for the pandemic years of 2020 and 2021.

Celebration is an integral part of the holidays.   Whether the celebrations are large or small, boisterous or solemn, steeped in tradition or comprised of new adventures, the spirit of celebration shines through even in the most difficult circumstances.

That’s because celebrations are important to our well-being.  They help us to pause, to be in the present, and enjoy the moment.  They also allow us to acknowledge the past – accomplishments and traditions – and provide us with hope for the future.  Most importantly, celebration nurtures our connections to ourselves and to each other.

Positive psychology research indicates that the act of celebrating gives us a positive uplift.  And that helps us to build resilience against the stress of daily life.

Looking forward to celebrations fuels optimism, another emotional boost!

It’s hard to find anything remotely negative about celebrating.  Sure, we all have “that’ relative that takes a little extra work.  This time of year it’s common to hear concerns about having enough time or money, meeting expectations, figuring out what to wear, managing diets, and a variety of other small details.  But those issues fade quickly when we are engaged in the actual act of celebration.

Celebrations don’t have to be big or have a price tag.  Spend time with a friend, sing a song, say a prayer, decorate a cookie, raise a glass, watch a movie, read a book, take a walk, snuggle with your dog… seek out small moments to celebrate being alive, here and now.

My wish for you this holiday season is that you take advantage of the opportunities you have to celebrate.   Nothing will help to lift your spirits and fuel your inner strength the way a few moments of celebration can.

Happy Holidays!!!
