motivation and Perceptual Style

Tina’s Perceptual Style™ is ACTIVITY.

She sees the world as a dynamic and exciting experience enriched by a personal network of family, friends, and acquaintances.

Tina is a very active person, always doing something. Her friends comment that she seems to always be in motion—thinking, doing, or being.

Because patterns and connections are constantly changing, Tina knows she can’t absorb the full richness of life unless she is engaged and participating in it.

She finds observation and analysis dull and boring, and there is too much to do, see, and experience to waste time on that.

Tina’s world is a complex one in which nothing is static, and the pieces are constantly reconnecting into new patterns and relationships.

When it comes to self-motivation, Tina is motivated by opportunites for interpersonal interaction, new learning experiences, and problem solving. She likes to be in the middle of the action and feel fully involved. Tina finds isolation and tedious routine de-motivating.

Your Perceptual Style,

the way you make meaning of the world around you and take action,

influences what motivates (and demotivates) you.

Understanding what motivates you enables you to set yourself up for success by choosing environments and situations that support your self-motivation strengths.

Do you know what your natural strengths are?

Your Perceptual Style is the foundation of all your natural strengths, motivation included! How you see the world and make it meaningful to you has everything to do with how you create personal incentive for action.

The decisions you make, the actions you take, and the directions you choose are all influenced by your Perceptual Style because it defines reality for you.

The more you know about your Perceptual Style, the more you can tap into your natural strengths and potential. That’s because there’s an extensive set of skills and behaviors that naturally align with each Perceptual Style.

Perceptual Style Theory™, created by Gary M. Jordan, PhD, and Lynda-Ross Vega, defines six unique Perceptual Styles.

Each Perceptual Style represents a grouping of fundamental aspects of being human that results in a distinctive experience and characteristic behaviors.

The more you know about your Perceptual Style, the more you can tap into your natural strengths and potential. That’s because there’s an extensive set of skills and behaviors that naturally align with each Perceptual Style.

The alignment of skills and behaviors with Perceptual Style exists because people naturally see the things associated with their Perceptual Style. Those things are easy for them to grasp, understand, and use.

Awareness of the other five Perceptual Styles and how they differ from you provides incredible insights about your relationships with family and friends.

And understanding how other people differ from you is crucial to recognizing what motivates you doesn't necessarily motivate them.

Let's take a look at the ways the different Perceptual Styles deal with Self-Motivation (Creating Personal Incentive for Action):

ACTIVITY

  • You are motivated by the opportunity for activity and new experiences.

  • You are demotivated by people, situations, or activities that you experience as dull or uninteresting.

  • You share your self-motivation and enthusiasm to enroll others in your activities.

ADJUSTMENTS

  • You are motivated by the opportunity to acquire knowledge for yourself and to provide knowledge to others.

  • You are driven to understand the observable world as thoroughly as possible and believe this can be accomplished if given the time to study, examine, and explore.

  • You want to be knowledgeable, and you believe that others want to know what you know.

FLOW

  • You are motivated by the opportunity to make and nurture connections and build community.

  • People who you experience as hypocritical or insincere de-motivate you.

  • Opportunities to get involved, provide help, and build relationships and teamwork help restore your harmony and well-being.

GOALS

  • You are motivated by the opportunity to be in command of yourself, others, and the environment.

  • You leave when faced with ambiguous or routine environments.

  • You thrive on challenges and opportunities posed by immediate problems that need solving.

METHODS

  • You are motivated by the opportunity to create structure and to provide yourself and others with practical courses of action.

  • People you experience as inconsistent, unpredictable, and overly emotional de-motivate you.

  • Opportunities to bring order to chaos and people who value structure help you reengage.

VISION

  • You are motivated by the opportunity to influence the direction of events and the lives of the people around you.

  • You look for opportunities to think unconventionally, generate and develop ideas, and experiment imaginatively.

  • You tune out in bureaucratic, slow-moving, and unchanging environments or around overly cautious, rule-bound people.

Self-motivation is the catalyst for goals you make for yourself. Self-motivation creates your desire to accomplish your goals, establishes your commitment to action, and helps you overcome your fears of the unknown or failing.

  • Social Interaction is essential to your life. What's also interesting is that you will thrive in some social situations and surroundings and be miserable in others. Why continue guessing which is which?

  • Communication is vital. We all want to be understood, yet we experience disconnects with others that get in the way. How you see the world and make it meaningful to you has everything to do with how you express yourself and how you listen. Why not tap into your communication strengths right now to ensure the important connections you want?

  • Self-motivation spurs you to action for what you want to do and what you need to do. Why waste time with procrastination when you have the natural skills to tame it?

  • Some conflict in your life is inevitable. Whether the conflicts are minor or severe, you possess natural skills to help you deal effectively with opposition and disagreement. Why suffer through another uncomfortable conflict with someone you care about when you could use your strengths to diffuse and resolve the situation easily?

  • Change is constant; it's part of your daily life. Your adaptability strengths mean the difference between excessive worry and stress versus dealing with changes on your terms. Isn’t time to bring your strengths related to change out in the open?

  • Real leadership success happens from the inside out - using your natural strengths to guide and inspire others to great achievement. You are presented with opportunities to lead every day, in all aspects of your life. Why not harness your natural leadership skills and take the stress out of leading?

  • Persuasion is a critical life skill. Convincing others to agree with your point of view, adopt a particular perspective, or take a course of action you suggest is something you need to do every day – at work, at home, at school, with friends. Why not tap into your natural abilities to persuade with ease and confidence?

You don’t need this critical information about you someday…you need it now!
